The Adair County Sheriff’s Office is committed to the highest level of employee standards. Applicants must successfully complete a series of written examinations and undergo a thorough pre-employment background investigation. Applicants must also submit to and successfully complete a psychological examination and drug screening.

The Sheriff’s Office may advertise job openings, when available, by at least two of the three methods listed below. 

  • By posting through the Missouri Career Center in Kirksville, MO
  • By posting on the Sheriff’s Office web site
  • By posting in a local newspaper

As a full-time employee of Adair County, you are eligible for benefits to include, but not limited to, health and dental insurance, life insurance, retirement benefits, holiday and sick days.

Applicants for Deputy Sheriff must be at least 21 years of age and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.  All applicants must have or be able to obtain Missouri P.O.S.T. certification by appointment date.  Shift work and weekend work hours are required.  Basic computer skills are required. Residency within Adair County is required. 

  • The duties of a Deputy Sheriff include, but are not limited to:
    • Routine patrol of the county
    • Response to calls for service
    • Courtroom security
    • Facility to facility transport of inmates
    • Investigation of crimes
    • Service of civil process papers

Applicants for full or part-time Corrections Officers must be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.  Shift work and weekend work hours are required.  Basic computer skills are required. Residency within Adair County is not required. 

  • The duties of a Corrections Officer include, but are not limited to:
    • Security and monitoring of all inmates housed in the Adair County Detention Center
    • Transport of inmates to court proceedings
    • Assisting medical staff in the dispensing of medications and monitoring of medical conditions
