Corrections Officer

The Sheriff’s Office is always accepting applications for part-time Corrections Officers. It is the general rule of the Sheriff’s Office that all Corrections Officers start as part-time. As a full-time Corrections Officer position becomes available, the position will be filled from within its part-time employees.  Please note both general and specific qualifications listed below. Deputy Sheriff

The Sheriff’s Office has an immediate opening for a full-time Deputy Sheriff.  Please note both general and specific qualifications listed below. See the Application Process below for instructions on how to apply. Applications will be accepted until close of business on November 30, 2015.

As a full-time employee of Adair County, you are eligible for benefits to include, but not limited to, health and dental insurance, life insurance, retirement benefits, holiday and sick days.

The following are considered to be general minimum qualifications for any position within the Sheriff’s Office.

  • Be a United States Citizen.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Possess a valid Missouri Driver’s License and have a good driving record.
  • Be computer literate and able to type 25 wpm.
  • Must possess a certified copy of a Birth Certificate.
  • Must possess a Social Security card.
  • May not have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
  • Must be of good moral character.
  • No felony convictions, arrests or other law enforcement interaction involving perjury, false statements, or domestic violence.
  • Will undergo criminal records check which includes fingerprints.
  • Will undergo drug screening.

Below are specific minimum qualifications to the listed position.

Corrections Officer:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be willing to work various shifts and flexible hours, to include holidays and weekends.
  • Must be capable of working at least eight (8) hours per two (2) week pay period.

Deputy Sheriff:

  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be P.O.S.T. certified.
  • Must successfully pass an extensive background investigation and polygraph examination.
  • Be willing to work various shifts and flexible hours, to include holidays and weekends.
  • Must be willing to be on-call and/or subject to re-call.
  • Must successfully pass a medical and psychological screening.
  • Must be willing to establish residency in Adair County.
  • The following qualifications are preferred but not required:
    • 60 semester hours / 90 quarter hours of study or equivalent Associates Degree from an accredited college, university, community college, or
    • Prior active duty U.S. Military service, or
    • Prior experience as a law enforcement officer.

The Sheriff’s Office will only accept applications that have been typed via the application process below.  The application form requires Microsoft Word 2007 or higher to open.  If you do not have access to Microsoft Word, you may go the Missouri Career Center where computers with the required systems are available for your use.

Upon completing the Employment Application and Authorization for Release of Information, print the documents.  Sign and date both documents and deliver them to the Missouri Career Center located at 2105 E. Normal Street in Kirksville, Missouri.
