Jail Commissary


The Sheriff’s Office provides a commissary service to the inmates through Swanson Services Corporation.

The commissary, which is operated and managed through Swanson Services, provides an inmate the opportunity to purchase items such as snacks, extra clothing, hygiene items, stamps and envelopes, etc… in addition to what is provided by the Detention Center.

Money may be added to an inmate’s account to purchase commissary items by coming into the Sheriff’s Office and using the cashier machine located in the visitors lobby.

The Cashier will accept cash (No $1 bills accepted) for a $2.75 fee and credit cards for a $4.95 fee.

If you do not live in Adair County or are unable to come to the Sheriff’s Office, money orders or cashier’s checks may be mailed directly to the Sheriff’s Office at 215 N. Franklin St. Kirksville, MO 63501. Make the money orders or cashier’s checks payable to the inmate who is to receive the commissary funds. The Sheriff’s Office will not accept cash.

Inmates place their commissary orders once a week on Monday nights. All money and money orders/ cashier checks need to be to the Sheriff’s Office by 4pm on Mondays for the money to be available to the inmates for their orders for that week.

When an inmate is released from the Detention Center, they must report to the receptionist’s window in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office, Monday – Friday, 8am to 5pm, to request a refund of any unused commissary funds that may be on their account. The inmate must show photo identification in order to receive a refund.

In that the commissary is a privilege, the Sheriff’s Office may suspend for an indefinite period this privilege when it is determined that the safety and welfare of the inmate(s), staff and/or facility is jeopardized. Suspension may also be based upon program administrative issues.
